AkzoNobel, one of the largest employers in the North East, is investing nearly £11m in developing new research facilities at its site in Felling near Gateshead.

The new facility  will be used to develop new products for the energy, mining, infrastructure and oil and gas industries, with particular focus on creating innovative and efficient new measures for protecting steel and concrete structures from damage.

Akzo Nobel is particularly well-known for manufacturing Dulux and and Hammerite paint, but has also produced the protective coatings for famous landmarks including the Sage in Gateshead, Centre Court in Wimbledon and the Millennium Bridge.

“Having grown up in the North East of England, I am very aware of the strengths of the chemical sector in the region. AkzoNobel’s significant investment in establishing a new technical innovation hub is further proof that Britain is open for business and underlines the growth we want to see and support in our local economies.”
