Devolution and local growth

Handing power back to Northern cities is a key part of the government’s plans to build a Northern Powerhouse. Our bold devolution agenda is transferring powers away from Westminster to local people, and we are absolutely committed to seeing it continue.

We have also allocated £3.4 billion in Growth Deals to the Northern Powerhouse – providing targeted financial support to locally-determined projects in order to unlock growth – giving local people the powers and tools they need to drive forward growth for their areas.

What we are doing

Historic devolution deals and new mayors

We’ve agreed historic Northern Powerhouse devolution deals, giving the North access to billions of pounds of new funding. In 2017 some Northern regions will gain powerful new voices in national life through directly elected mayors.

GM&C Life Science Fund

The GM&C Life Sciences Fund is a seed and early stage venture capital fund targeting life sciences businesses located in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire & Warrington region. The Fund is based at Alderley Park, the largest life sciences campus of its kind in the UK with more than 500,000 sq. ft. of top-end laboratory and related space and facilities.

Barrow Advanced Manufacturing College

A multi-million-pound Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre based in Furness College, Barrow will boost engineering and advanced manufacturing expertise throughout the county by enabling the college to train up to 1,150 apprentices at any one time. The centre will host engineering and advanced manufacturing research, rapid prototyping and high voltage test laboratories.

Albert Dock flood defenses

1.6 kilometres of new flood walls have greatly reduced the risk of flooding for 300 homes and businesses close to Albert Dock in Hull. These works will help to safeguard existing jobs in Hull and contribute to the prosperity of the area by enabling new developments in the future.

Kirklees College – Process Manufacturing Centre

Supported by over £3 million of LGF funding, the Process Manufacturing Centre (PMC) is an employer led training centre for process manufacturing industries, offering a state of the art process manufacturing training facility, chemistry laboratories as well as IT and learning resources.

Shipley College refurbishment

A Grade Two listed Mill Building in Saltaire, West Yorkshire now provides teaching facilities for a range of students and classes including Maths, English and Languages thanks to a LGF grant. The building has undergone a £388,000 refurbishment including new energy efficient windows and lighting, roof works and the refurbishment of the existing teaching and student space. It is the first project funded by the Leeds City Region Growth Deal to be completed.

Olympic Legacy Park

The Olympic Legacy Park (OLP) has been awarded £4.9 Local Growth Funding to enable it to become an internationally recognised centre for health, wellbeing and innovation. The 35-acre Olympic Legacy Park in the East End of Sheffield will create 1,000 high-value jobs, and already attracted investment of leading companies like Toshiba and Westfield Health.
